This is an anime I first saw 20 years ago...

I found the video the day before an exam and thought to myself, ‘I’ll just watch one 20-minute episode,’ but I ended up watching for 4 hours straight. T_T

I remember it having quite a philosophical plot, though I don’t recall all the details.
The male protagonist was Shinji and the female lead was Rei. There was also a girl from Germany.

The story is about piloting robots to defeat enemies, but the robots are plugged into a power source.
If the cable is disconnected, they can only function for about a minute.
